Hill Cove

Almost directly west of Port Howard, now reached by a good road, Hill Cove acquired a certain fame for being the only place in the Falkland Islands where a forest plantation, primarily conifers such as pines and Sitka spruce, has been successful. Some specimens reach 50 feet in a land where most ornamentals are stunted and wind-flagged, but recently they’ve suffered parasitic attacks that have killed many of them.

Since its subdivision and sale, the settlement is a lesser focus than the outside houses, some of which offer accommodations. On the site of the initial settlement, northeast of Hill Cove proper, Paul and Davina Peck’s Shallow Bay Guest House (tel. 41007, psb [at] horizon [dot] co [dot] fk, £20 pp self-catering, £30 pp with full board) occupies one of the Islands’ oldest stone houses.

Rates at Peter and Shelley Nightingale’s West Lagoons Farm (tel. 41194, shelley [at] cwimail [dot] fk, £33 pp) include full board.
