From beautiful coastal hikes to fine dining, here’s how to spend one day in Carmel, California.

Morning

Grab a coffee and a pastry to-go at Carmel Valley Coffee Roasting Co. and head straight to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve to get there early before the popular park’s parking lot fills up. Spend the morning marveling at the twisted cypress trees artfully decorating the coastline above the bright green surf before heading into downtown Carmel-by-the Sea.

Afternoon

For lunch, enjoy where French-meets-Californian cuisine at longtime favorite La Bicyclette, then walk off the calories by strolling down Ocean Avenue, stopping into one of the city’s boutiques or art galleries on the way down to Carmel Beach, where flour-white sand contrasts with the bright blue sea. Maybe stop into one of Carmel-by-the-Sea’s 18 wine-tasting rooms for a pre-dinner sipper.

Evening

Go big with a once-in-a-lifetime dinner at Aubergine. Or opt for a more casual sushi dinner at Toro Sushi with its extensive sake menu. Finish the night with ambiance and a cocktail at Bud’s Bar inside the elegant La Playa Carmel.

Stuart later moved to nearby Monterey to become a staff writer for the Monterey County Weekly, where he is still a contributor. He is the proud author of Moon Coastal California, Moon Santa Barbara & the Central Coast, Moon Spotlight Cambria & San Simeon, and Moon California Road Trip.
