Escape to the Exuma Islands

The Exuma Islands, a string of 365 islands and cays that offer a more remote, rugged Bahamas experience, are the perfect four-night getaway from Nassau.

Day 1: Little Exuma

Depart Nassau on the morning flight to George Town, Great Exuma. Grab a rental car from the airport and make your way south to Little Exuma, watching for signs for Tropic of Cancer Beach to set out your beach towel and relax. For lunch, head south to Santanna’s, an open-air bar and restaurant wedged between Queen’s Highway and the ocean. On your way back north, stop at the Rolle Town Tombs, dating to the 1790s. Settle into your hotel in George Town and then head to the Fish Fry in the evening to mingle with the locals.

Day 2: Stocking Island

The next day, make your way into town for breakfast at the Driftwood Café and then stop into Sandpiper Arts & Crafts for locally made souvenirs. Arrange your transportation over to Lumina Point, an off-the-grid eco-resort on Stocking Island. Spend the afternoon hiking and exploring the gorgeous beaches. Head over to Chat ‘N’ Chill for an afternoon cocktail and swim on the beach, where you’ll fit right in with the laid-back boater crowd. If it’s a Sunday, the place will be packed for their famous pig roast. For a quiet sunset over the harbor, head back to Lumina Point for dinner at The Beacon.

Day 3: Staniel Cay

Awake for a beach walk in solitude. Arrange with a local charter company for a full-day exploration to Staniel Cay. Along the way you’ll snorkel with stingrays among shallow coral gardens and stop at breathtaking sandbars. Get dropped off in Staniel Cay and check into the waterfront cottages at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club. Grab a tropical drink and dinner at the bar at the Yacht Club while you mingle with the boat owners and crews from the marina.

Day 4: Big Major’s Cay

Rise with the sun and rent a small skiff to explore on your own, or opt for a guided tour. Snorkel nearby Thunderball Grotto and feed the infamous swimming pigs at Big Major’s Cay. Stop in for lunch at Compass Cay and pet the resident nurse sharks. Enjoy one more night in Staniel Cay and fly out directly to Fort Lauderdale or back to Nassau.

With More Time…

Extend your stay with a night at the private island Fowl Cay Resort, with private beaches striking hilltop views. Arrange an adventure into the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park and discover endless miles of undeveloped hiking and diverse sealife. Fly out from nearby Staniel Cay.
