Off Lewiston Road directly across from the Devil’s Hole State Park runs University Drive, which leads to Niagara University and the Castellani Art Museum (Senior Dr., off University Dr., 716/286-8200, www.niagara.edu/cam [1], 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Sat., 1–5 p.m. Sun., free admission). Dedicated in 1990, the airy edifice houses over 3,000 artworks ranging from the Hudson River School to modern sculpture.
Contemporary artists (David Hockney, Charles Burchfield, Alexander Calder, Willem de Kooning, Cindy Sherman, Nam June Paik) are especially well represented. The museum’s strong Folk Arts Program sponsors temporary exhibits on such subjects as Polish-American Easter traditions, African American gospel traditions, and Halloween.
