The smallest of the major Finger Lakes [1], Owasco is 12 miles long and 1.5 miles wide at its widest point. Iroquois for “the crossing,” it lies 720 feet above sea level. For great views of Owasco, take Route 38 south, hugging the western shore, or Route 38A south, which travels high above the lake to the east. A few miles down, Route 38A bumps into Rockefeller Road, a shoreline route lined with 150-year-old camps and houses.
At the northern end of Owasco sits the city of Auburn [2], population 31,200. At the southern end are the village of Moravia [3], birthplace of President Millard Fillmore, the Fillmore Glen State Park, and miles of farm country.
