The 36-acre Rosamond Gifford Zoo (500 Burnet Park Dr., off S. Wilbur Ave., 315/435-8511, http://rosamondgiffordzoo.org [1], 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. daily, adults $6.50; seniors and students $4.50, and children 3–15 $4) on the west side of town houses close to 1,000 animals and birds living in re-created natural habitats. The various inhabitants enjoy an arctic tundra, a tropical rain forest, an arid desert, and a region called the Wild North.
A successful Humboldt penguin breeding program (the zoo recently welcomed its thirteenth chick), Adaptation of Animals exhibit, public overnights, and meet-the-elephant opportunities are a few of the zoo’s highlights.
