Between Saratoga [1] and Vermont [2], the Adirondack Mountains and the Green Mountains, lies a sliver of a county reaching north to Lake Champlain [3]. Though often overlooked by travelers in the region, the countryside here is exceptionally lovely and quite different from elsewhere in the state.
The hills are smaller, greener, and closer together; the villages, more genteel and picturesque. So it comes as no surprise to learn that this is Grandma Moses Country. The self-taught folk artist grew up near Eagle Bridge [4] in southern Washington County, and painted the scenes she found around her.
Her legacy is acknowledged by the many artists who live in the area, and by the vibrant arts scene flourishing along the New York–Vermont border.
