Numerous shops occupy Cooperstown [1] and the surrounding area. A few miles south of Cooperstown is the Fly Creek Cider Mill (288 Goose St., off Route 28/80, 607/547-9692, http://flycreekcidermill.com [2], 9 a.m.–6 p.m. daily), where apples are pressed in a wooden, 19th-century cider mill. The mill is powered by water and all original equipment is used. Also on site is an extensive gift shop and a snack bar selling lots of tasty homemade treats and, of course, fresh cider. Out back is a duck pond and play area that will delight young kids.
Among the region’s more unusual stores is Wood Bull Antiques (3920 Rte. 28, 607/286-9021), in a large barn eight miles south of Cooperstown. According to the owners, the merchandise has been gathered from over 20 years of attic rummaging and close to 3,000 auctions.
