On the north side of Albany [1], in a neighborhood known as Arbor Hill, stands an imperial Federal-style home (9 Ten Broeck Pl. between Ten Broeck and N. Swan Sts., 518/436-9826, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Thurs.–Fri. and 1–4 p.m. Sat.–Sun. May–Dec., adults $5, seniors and students $4, children 5–12 $3), built for Abraham Ten Broeck and his wife Elizabeth Van Rensselaer in 1797–98. Ten Broeck served as a general in the Continental Army and later as state senator, judge, and mayor of Albany.
Now owned by the Albany County Historical Association, the mansion contains a fine collection of period furniture, and showcases changing historic exhibits. In the basement hides a snug wine cellar that wasn’t rediscovered until the 1970s. Its rare contents were sold for a whopping $42,000, and the proceeds were used to restore the house.
