To the east of Clermont [1], amid rolling hills, is the pristine Lake Taghkanic State Park (1582 Rte. 82, just east of Taconic State Pkwy., Ancram, 518/851-3631, sunrise–sunset daily, parking $8 May–Sept.) centering on cool, blue Lake Taghkanic, a 1,569-acre body of water ringed with bathing beaches and boat launches. Hiking trails climb small peaks to offer splendid views of the valley below.
Also in the park are a top-rated campground with 60 campsites, picnic areas, a boat-rental shop, ball field, and fitness trail. The campground is open May–October; for reservations, call 800/456-CAMP.
Not far from Lake Taghkanic State Park is the classic
West Taghkanic Diner (Rte. 82 at the Taconic State Pkwy., 518/851-7117), where the red, neon-lit profile of a Native American chief greets motorists as they pull up.
