There are many resort motels in and near Montauk [2]. One half mile west of the village is The Breakers Motel (769 Old Montauk Hwy., 631/668-2525, www.breakersmontauk.com [3], $150–210 in summer, $105 off-season), which offers motel rooms, studios, and cottages, all of which face the beach.

Another motel resort option is the clean and friendly Atlantic Terrace (21 Surfside Pl., 631/668-2050, $190–285 d in summer, $110–165 off-season), conveniently located right on the ocean and three blocks from downtown.

The Royal Atlantic Beach Resort (126 S. Edgemere St., at Montauk Hwy., 631/668-5103, $235–310 in summer, $110–135 off-season) offers a variety of accommodations as well, including studios, one-bedroom suites, and “two-story luxury beach houses”; all have kitchenettes and private terraces.

On the edge of Montauk village, by the beach, is the modern, gray-shingled Surf Club (S. Essex St. and Surfside Ave., 631/668-3800, www.duneresorts.com [4], $255–510 in summer, varies greatly depending on dates), a condominium resort that also rents spiffy one- and two-bedroom duplexes. The condos are built around an attractive pool.

At the achingly hip The Surf Lodge (183 Edgemere St., 631/668 1562, the surflodge.com, $275–400), rooms open onto a private sundeck, complete with hammocks for lazy afternoon siestas. Along with iPod docks, a complimentary bar of “sex wax” (which, of course, gives surfers a better grip on their boards) is provided in each room. Despite Wi-Fi throughout, this is a true getaway where phones are nonexistent and where even a visit to the website is an experience. Impressive concert series, outdoor ‘surf cinema,’ and live art installations are rounded out with a stylish bar and restaurant.

Now over 60 years old, Montauk [2]’s grande dame is Gurney’s Inn Resort & Spa (290 Old Montauk Hwy., 631/668-2345, www.gurneysinn.com [5], $395–720 in summer, including a full breakfast and dinner, $198–465 off-season). The inn is perched on a bluff overlooking the ocean and has a rustic, old-fashioned feel. Heavy wooden furniture fills the main lodge, while along the beach are new and very spacious guest rooms filled with amenities. Gurney’s also features a state-of-the-art spa and a full-service restaurant serving continental fare.
