New York Transit Museum

Two blocks southwest of Borough Hall is the New York Transit Museum (northwest corner of Schermerhorn St. and Boerum Pl., 718/243-3060, www.mta.info/mta/museum [1], 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tues.–Fri., noon–5 p.m. Sat.–Sun., adults $5, seniors and children 3–17 $3), run by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA).

Appropriately housed in a former subway station, the museum sports well-lit tiled walls that seem to stretch out forever into the darkness. Some wonderful old restored subway cars are housed here, along with fascinating exhibits on such subjects as the building of the subway, the history of the “Els” (“elevated” subways lines), trolleys, and buses.
