Most of the Broadway theaters are not on Broadway at all, but on the side streets surrounding Times Square [1]. The area is home to 37 legitimate theaters, 22 of which are city landmarks. West 44th and 45th Streets between 7th and 8th Avenues are especially rich blocks; here you’ll find the Shubert, Helen Hayes, Booth, Majestic, and Minskoff theaters, among others.
Next to the Shubert, connecting 44th and 45th Streets, is Shubert Alley, where unemployed performers once waited, hoping for a part. Today, a souvenir shop selling theater memorabilia is located here. Across from the Shubert is the legendary Sardi’s Restaurant (234 W. 44th St., 212/221-8440, www.sardis.com [2], lunch and dinner Tues.–Sun.), its walls lined with caricatures. Once frequented by theater folks, Sardi’s now attracts mostly tourists, but is still a fun and lively spot serving a varied international cuisine.
