Recently expanded with a major renovation, the Morgan Library (Madison Ave. and 36th St., 212/685-0610, www.morganlibrary.org , 10:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Thurs., 10:30 a.m.–9 p.m. Fri., 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Sat., 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Sun., adults $12, children under 16, students, and seniors $8) is an elegant neoclassic gem designed by McKim, Mead & White in 1906 as John Pierpont Morgan’s personal library and art gallery.
Now a museum, it retains its original elaborately carved wooden ceilings, medieval tapestries, renaissance paintings, and domed rotunda. At the heart of the museum’s collection are Morgan’s priceless illuminated manuscripts and Old Master drawings.
