The Cape Fear Museum was founded in 1898 and is the oldest history museum in North Carolina. In the beginning, it was the newest chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy in Wilmington [2], which began collecting Confederate artifacts from the Civil War.
Today, the museum houses more than 50,000 historical, cultural, and scientific artifacts with significance to the Lower Cape Fear region. Permanent exhibits include a Maritime Pavilion, a Michael Jordan Discovery Gallery, and Cape Fear Stories.
The museum also hosts special exhibits that rotate throughout the year.
