Relative to the rest of Canada, British Columbia [1]’s climate is ideal for golfing, especially on Vancouver Island [2], where the sport can be enjoyed year-round. Many of the province’s 280 courses are in spectacular mountain, ocean, or lake settings. Municipal courses offer the lowest greens fees, generally $15–40, but the semiprivate, private, and resort courses usually boast the most spectacular locations. At these courses, greens fees can be as high as $200. At all but the smallest municipal courses, club rentals, power carts, and lessons are available, and at all but the most exclusive city courses, nonmembers are welcomed with open arms. The mild climate and abundance of water create ideal conditions for the upkeep of golf courses in the south of the province—you’ll be surprised at how immaculately manicured most are. (In the north, many courses have oil-soaked or artificial-grass greens to make upkeep easier.)
