The seven-room Harbour House Bed and Breakfast (106th St., 867/874-2233, www.greenwayrealty.ca [1], $80 s, $90 d) is an excellent choice for accommodations in Hay River [2]. Across from Vale Island’s best beach, the setting is wonderful and the mood casual. Rates include a full breakfast.
A couple of kilometers (1.2 miles) south from downtown is Cedar Rest Motel (938 Mackenzie Hwy., 867/874-3732, $95 s, $105 d), a place that looks half finished, with a massive gravel parking lot out front broken by a gas station. At the centrally located Ptarmigan Inn (867/874-6781 or 800/661-0842, www.ptarmiganinn.com [3], $134–179 s or d), rooms are air-conditioned and have high-speed Internet access.
Hay River Territorial Park (867/874-3772, Vale Island, mid-May–mid-Sept., $17–21) is a short walk from the beach and seven kilometers (4.3 miles) from downtown. The 35 sites are private, a few have power, and all have picnic tables and fire rings.
