Canada’s oldest municipal course is the Victoria Golf Course (west of the Legislature Building along River Road, 780/496-4710, $38–46), which is still owned and operated by the city. This 18-hole course is only a little more than 6,000 yards in length but is made challenging by narrow fairways and smallish greens.
As a keen golfer, I can highly recommend the following courses that have opened in the last decade: 7,330-yard RedTail Landing (Hwy. 2 by the airport, 780/890-7888, $95), a links-style layout with well-placed bunkers and multiple water hazards; The Ranch (52516 Range Rd., Spruce Grove, 780/470-4700, $75), featuring a water-lined trio of finishing holes; and Northern Bear (Township Rd. 510, 780/922-2327, $95), designed by Jack Nicklaus.
