The Devonian Botanic Garden (780/987-3054, July–Aug. Mon.–Wed. 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Thurs.–Sun. 10 a.m.–8 p.m., May and Sept. daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m., adult $13, senior $8.50, child $5), developed by the University of Alberta, are southwest of the city and five kilometers (3.1 miles) north of the small town of Devon.
The highlight is the Kurimoto Japanese Garden, one of the world’s northernmost authentic Japanese gardens. The various natural elements are complemented by an ornamental gate, an arched bridge, and decorative lanterns.
Other features are the large Alpine Garden, with examples of plants from mountainous regions; the Herb Garden, where, in August, the aroma is almost overpowering; the Peony Collection, which is at its most colorful in July; a greenhouse filled with plants unique to the Southern Hemisphere; and the Native People’s Garden, which is surrounded by water and showcases plants used by the native people of Alberta [1].
