The Sheep River Valley lies immediately south of the Elbow River Valley, in an area of rolling foothills between open ranchlands to the east and the high peaks bordering Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Park to the west. Access is from the town of Turner Valley (take Sunset Blvd. west from downtown), along Highway 546.
The highway passes through Sheep River Provincial Park (which protects the wintering ground of bighorn sheep) and Sheep River Falls, and ends at a campground 46 kilometers (29 miles) west of Turner Valley.
Along Highway 546, west from Turner Valley, are two campgrounds. Sandy McNabb Campround (403/558-2373 or 866/366-2267, www.campingalberta.com [1], $20), the larger of the two, is a pleasant walk from the river right by the entrance to Kananaskis Country [2]. All sites are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
