No camping is available within the Calgary [1] city limits, although campgrounds can be found along all major routes into the city. Shuttle buses run to and from campgrounds into Stampede Park during the Calgary Stampede [2].
The only Calgary campground with an outdoor swimming pool is
Calgary West Campground (221 101st St. SW, 403/288-0411 or 888/562-0842, www.calgarycampground.com [3], mid-Apr.–mid-Oct., unserviced sites $32, hookups $39–43), on a north-facing hill a short way west of Canada Olympic Park [4]. In addition to the pool, modern facilities include showers, a laundry room, a game room, and a grocery store. Around 320 sites are laid out on terraces, so no one misses out on the views.
Calaway Park (10 km/6.2 mi west of city limits, 403/249-7372, www.calawaypark.com [5], mid-May–Aug., tent sites $24, hookups $29–35) is farther out along the TransCanada Highway. It offers a large, open camping area. Trees are scarce, but on clear days the view of the Canadian Rockies is spectacular.
Whispering Spruce Campground (403/226-0097, www.whisperingspruce.com [6], Apr.–Oct., tent sites $24, hookups $26–28) is on the west side of Highway 2, 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) north of the airport. Facilities include showers, a small grocery store, laundry, a game room, and horseshoe pits.
Mountainview Farm Campground, three kilometers (1.9 mi) east of the city limits on the TransCanada Highway (403/293-6640, www.calgarycamping.com [7], tent sites $31, hookups $35–40) doesn’t have a view of the mountains, but it does have mini-golf and hay rides. The sites are very close together. Facilities include showers, a grocery store, and a laundry room.
