One of the easiest yet most enjoyable walks in Yoho National Park [1] is the Emerald Lake Loop (5.2 km/3.2 mi, 1.5 hours round-trip). The trail encircles the lake and can be hiked in either direction. The best views are from the western shoreline, where a massive avalanche has cleared away the forest of Engelmann spruce.
The trail to Emerald Basin (4.5 km/2.8 mi, 1.5–2 hours one-way) gains 280 meters (920 feet) of elevation after leaving the lakeshore 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) from the parking lot.
The most impressive sight awaiting you in the basin is the south wall of the President Range, towering 800 vertical meters (2,625 feet) above. The trail to Hamilton Falls (800 m/0.5 mi, 40 minutes one-way) is an easy walk that begins from the Emerald Lake [2] parking lot.
