Science World

This impressive, 17-story-high geodesic silver dome (it’s best known locally as “the golf ball”) sits over the waters of False Creek [1] on the southeast side of the city center (1455 Quebec St., 604/443-7440, daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m., adult $18.75, senior and child $13.75, includes admission to one OMNIMAX film).

Built for Expo86, this Vancouver [2] landmark is now home to a museum providing exhibitions that “introduce the world of science to the young and the young at heart.” The three main galleries explore the basics of physics, natural history, and music through hands-on displays. The audiovisual presentation Over Canada is a highlight. An OMNIMAX theater (like IMAX) features science-oriented documentaries.

The most enjoyable way to get to Science World is aboard a False Creek Ferry from Granville Island [3] or the Vancouver Aquatic Centre. You could also take the SkyTrain to Main Street Station.
