Jim Brandenburg’s photography and Betsy Bowen’s woodcut prints are available at Sivertson Gallery (14 Wisconsin St. W., 218/387-2491 or 888/880-4369, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. daily), which sells “Art of the North” by regional, Canadian, and Alaskan artists, including many Native Americans.

You might see Bowen at her press at Betsy Bowen Studio (301 1st Ave. W., 218/387-1992, www.woodcut.com [1], 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Sat.), a converted 1903 church where many other artists sell their work.

Another great art gallery for shopping and admiring is the Johnson Heritage Post (115 Wisconsin St., 218/387-2314, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. daily summer, 1–4 p.m. Thurs.–Sun. rest of year), which sells pieces by regional artists and has a permanent exhibit of works by a local artist from the turn of the 20th century, Anna Johnson.

Birchbark Gallery (11 1st Ave. W., 218/ 387-2315, 7 a.m.–9 p.m. daily summer, hours vary rest of year) is a massive gift shop with a fantastic selection of Minnesota and North Shore books.

Drury Lane Books (12 Wisconsin St., 218/387-3370, www.drurylanebooks.com [2], 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Sun.) also has many regional titles.

For lower-brow shopping, pick up delicious fudge and some kitschy T-shirts at Beth’s Fudge and Gifts (11 Broadway S., 218/387-2081, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Sun., closed Sun. in winter).

The Dockside Fish Market (418 Hwy. 61 W., 218/387-2906, 9 a.m.–7 p.m. Sat.–Thurs., 9 a.m.–8 p.m. Fri., closed Jan.–March), better known as the fish house, is the Toftey family’s commercial fishing operation, which sells smoked and fresh fish direct to the public.

If you need any camping gear you’ll probably find it at the Lake Superior Trading Post (10 S. 1st Ave. W., 218/387-2020, www.lstp.com [3], 9 a.m.–8 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Sun.).
