What began as a wayside fish shack has grown into the legendary Betty’s Pies (1633 Hwy. 61 E., 218/834-3367 or 877/269-7494, www.bettyspies.com [1], 7 a.m.–9 p.m. daily, $6–16), which now has a full menu. Locals and regular visitors alike continually sing its praises, and it is not just hype—these pies are amazing. Expect a long wait for a table.

The homey Vanilla Bean Bakery & Cafe (812 7th Ave., 218/834-3714, www.thevanillabean.com [2], 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Sun.–Thurs., 7 a.m.–8:30 p.m. Fri.–Sat. May–Oct., reduced hours rest of year, $4–16) serves thin Swedish pancakes and a variety of omelets for breakfast and a full selection of favorites for lunch and dinner, from pasties and Swedish meatballs to smoked salmon and herring.

To keep a big group happy, head to Black Woods (612 7th Ave., 218/834-3846, www.blackwoods.com [3], 8 a.m.–10 p.m. daily), a big restaurant with an even bigger menu, including burgers, steaks, and pasta dishes. This is a good place for a hearty breakfast.

The fanciest dining in Two Harbors [4] is at Kamloops (218/834-5671, 7 a.m.–9 p.m. Sun.–Thurs., 7 a.m.–10 p.m. Fri.–Sat., $10–29) at the Superior Shores Resort. The menu has steak, seafood, and pasta, much of it with a Minnesota touch. The dining room overlooks the lake, and there is an outdoor deck.

South of town, you can get a good cup of coffee and a nice, light sandwich at Mocha Moose (543 Scenic Hwy. 61, 218/834-6299, www.mochamoose.com [5], 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Thurs., 7 a.m.–6 p.m. Fri., 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Sat., 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Sun.). This is a convenient North Shore–themed gift shop, as well.
