The UMD Bulldogs compete in a full slate of NCAA Division II athletics, but for the fans it is pretty much all about hockey. Despite the school’s small size, the men’s team is a regular contender in the Division I WCHA conference and counts Brett Hull among the dozens of alumni who have skated in the NHL. Order tickets through the UMD Ticket Office (218/726-8595 or 877/221-8168, www.umndbulldogs.com [1]).
The Duluth Huskies play in the Northwoods League, made up of Division I college baseball players who get minor-league experience while keeping their college eligibility. Home games are played at historic Wade Stadium (34th Ave. W. & Grand Ave., 218/786-9909, www.duluthhuskies.com [2]). Tickets start at $6.
Many of the world’s best curlers compete for the Duluth Curling Club (218/727-1851, www.duluthcurlingclub.com [3]), whose home ice is at the DECC. The bonspiel season runs November to March, and they have introductory clinics if you want to throw some stones of your own.
