The UMD Bulldogs compete in a full slate of NCAA Division II athletics, but for the fans it is pretty much all about hockey. Despite the school’s small size, the men’s team is a regular contender in the Division I WCHA conference and counts Brett Hull among the dozens of alumni who have skated in the NHL. The Duluth Huskies play in the Northwoods League, made up of Division I college baseball players who get minor-league experience while keeping their college eligibility. Many of the world’s best curlers compete for the Duluth Curling Club (218/727-1851, www.duluthcurlingclub.com ), whose home ice is at the DECC. The bonspiel season runs November to March, and they have introductory clinics if you want to throw some stones of your own.
