It’s hard to miss the Inn at Whittier [3] (907/472-3200, www.innatwhittier.com [4]), an elaborate New England–style building right on the harbor. Now owned by Hooper Bay Native Corporation, the hotel has 23 standard rooms ($169–189 d) and a pair of two-story townhouse suites ($249 for 4 guests).
Camping (907/472-2670, $10) next to Begich Tower is plentiful, with secluded spots for tents and RVs, and a shelter for cooking and socializing in the rain. There are no hookups or running water, but you can use bathrooms on the first floor of Begich Tower, and showers are available at the harbormaster’s office.
