Anchorageites love strong coffee, and the town is packed with espresso stands and cafés—including the bland Starbucks versions. Tucked away in a Midtown shopping mall, Café del Mundo (341 E. Benson Blvd., 907/274-0026, www.cafedelmundo.com [1], $3–8) is a favorite of the lawyer and Volvo crowd, and is a relaxing place to while away a morning.
Upscale Terra Bella (907/562-2259, www.terrabellacoffee.com [2]) has a good choice of sandwiches, paninis, and salads. They’re in a Southside strip mall at 601 E. Dimond Avenue.
A personal favorite is the local chain of nine Kaladi Brothers espresso shops (www.kaladi.com [3]), including branches inside the New Sagaya grocery stores and Titlewave Books. All have free Wi-Fi. Many other Alaskan coffee shops buy their espresso beans from Kaladi Brothers, and they’ve even opened a shop in downtown Seattle—the heart of enemy (Starbucks) territory.
