Located on a 26-acre site facing the Chugach Mountains, the Alaska Native Heritage Center (907/330-8000 or 800/315-6608, www.alaskanative.net [1], daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m. mid-May–mid-Sept., $25 adults, $21 seniors, $17 ages 7–16, kids under 7 free) provides an excellent introduction to Native Alaskan culture in the state.
A joint ticket provides access to both the Anchorage Museum [2] and the Heritage center for $26.
The central “Welcome House” has a variety of exhibits and is used for concerts and demonstrations. Outside, five traditional village settings have been recreated around a small lake, and Native Alaskan guides explain Alaska’s various cultures.
The Alaska Native Heritage Center is east of downtown near the intersection of the Glenn Highway and Muldoon Road. A free shuttle runs from the downtown Log Cabin Visitor Center [3] and the Anchorage Museum [2] four times daily in the summer.
