Camping

The Park Service maintains a peaceful campground ($10) at Dyea [1], northeast of Skagway [2]. It is especially popular with hikers along the Chilkoot Trail [3]. You’ll need to bring water or filter it from the river. For those without wheels, hitching is possible, or contact one of the local taxi companies for a ride. Showers are available from local RV parks or at the small boat harbor.

Skagway’s three private campgrounds are all open May–September. Skagway Mountain View RV Park (14th Ave. and Broadway, 907/983-3333 or 888/778-7700, www.alaskarv.com [4], RVs $46, tents $26) is the in-town campground, with wooded sites, toilets, showers, and Wi-Fi. The narrow-gauge tracks border the grounds, making this a good place for train photo opportunities.

Pullen Creek RV Park (907/983-2768 or 800/936-3731, www.pullencreekrv.com [5], RVs $36, tents $20) is next to the harbor and cruise ship dock. This is great if you like being in the heart of the action with steam engines, cruise ships, and shopping, but not so great if you’re looking for a quieter, more natural setting.

Garden City RV Park (16th Ave. and State St., 907/983-2378 or 866/983-2378) is little more than a parking lot with a bathhouse; call for current rates.
