Located at four corners (near the gas station), Homeshore Café (907/697-2822, Tues.–Sat. 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m., 5–8 p.m. summer) is popular for lunchtime sandwiches, salads, and homemade soups, plus evening pizzas ($20–27) to eat in or take away.
Espresso aficionados head to the Wings (907/697-2201, daily 7 a.m.–3 p.m. mid-May–mid-Sept., Mon.–Sat. 8 a.m.–2 p.m. winter, $4–6) inside the Wings of Alaska airport terminal. It has an odd location, but this is a delightful little coffee shop with lattes, doughnuts (flown in from Juneau [1]), and fresh lunchtime sandwiches.
Open for lunch and dinner, Bear’s Nest Café (907/697-2440, www.gustavus.com/bearsnest [2], daily 11 a.m.–8 p.m. June–Aug., dinner entrées $22–32) specializes in locally caught salmon, halibut, and crab, along with salads and daily specials. Save room for a slice of their rhubarb-strawberry pie. Saturday night brings open-mike jam sessions.
An outstanding dinner option is Gustavus Inn (907/697-2255 or 800/649-5220, www.gustavusinn.com [3], $40), where a few spots are held for those who aren’t overnighting. Reservations are required. Glacier Bay Country Inn (907/697-2288 or 800/628-0912, www.glacierbayalaska.com [4]) serves nightly meals ($35) at 6 and 8 p.m. in the summer.
Glacier Bay Lodge (907/697-4000, daily 6 a.m.–10 p.m., dinner entrées $18–30) in Bartlett Cove serves so-so meals; try the Dungeness crab, seafood chowder, or sweet potato fries. There’s casual dining on the outside deck, where a lighter menu ($10–15) is also available.
Open daily in the summer, the small grocery store at Gustavus [5], Beartrack Mercantile (907/697-2358), has a great little deli and sells essentials for a price, though it’s cheaper to bring food from Juneau [1]. Pep’s Packing (907/697-2295) sells locally caught salmon if you have access to a barbecue. Glacier Bay Lodge has a full bar, or you can purchase booze at Snug Harbor Liquor Store (907/723-8874).
