The Hangar (2 Marine Way, Merchant’s Wharf, 907/586-5018, www.hangaronthewharf.com [1], daily 11 a.m.–10 p.m., $9–30) is an extremely popular waterfront pub with seafood, steaks, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, and salads, but I usually keep it simple with halibut fish-and-chips and an Alaskan Amber. Historic photos line the walls, and you can head upstairs for a game of pool. It’s a great place to watch the sun go down while enjoying one of the 24 brews on tap. Loud, energetic, and fun are the operative terms.
Farther afield is Hot Bite (907/790-2483) at Auke Bay Harbor. The menu includes charbroiled burgers (the best in town), halibut and chips, grilled portobello mushroom sandwiches, milk shakes, and other tasty bites. Service can be slow since it’s all made to order.
If you’re out for a romantic meal, Juneau [2]’s
Zephyr Restaurant (200 Seward St., 907/780-2221, daily 4–11 p.m., entrées $18–32) is an excellent choice, with chandeliers, candlelit tables, and live piano jazz on weekends. House specialties include pancetta-encrusted lamb, roasted chicken with polenta and sautéed chard, as well as asparagus and parmesan ravioli. There’s also a late-night menu with lighter fare starting around $12.
