Port Alexander

Southeast Alaska [1]’s most remote settlement, tiny Port Alexander (pop. 50) sits near the southern tip of rugged Baranof Island. In the 1920s—heyday of the salmon canneries—the town buzzed with 2,000 workers. Today, Port Alexander is quiet and lovely, with boardwalks, a general store, a post office, and a one-teacher school. It’s also very rainy, averaging an incredible 220 inches of the wet stuff per year.

There’s a small fleet of long-liners and trollers, along with two sportfishing places: Laughing Raven Lodge (800/768-7752, www.portalexander.com [2]) and Fishermen’s Inn (907/568-2399 or 480/225-2217, www.fisherssinn.com [3]). Harris Aircraft Services (907/966-3050 or 877/966-3050, www.harrisaircraft.com [4]) flies several times per week between Sitka [5] and Port Alexander.
