Downtown in the basement of the Methodist church at Grant and Main Streets is the Ketchikan Youth Hostel (907/225-3319, www.ktnumc.com [2], June–Aug., $17 pp). It’s open 6 p.m.–9 a.m., and the doors are locked at 11 p.m. If your ferry will be getting in after that, call the hostel in advance and they’ll open for you.

The hostel isn’t fancy—we’re talking simple cots—but it is friendly and clean, with kitchen facilities and showers. It is a good place to meet other budget travelers. There’s a four-night maximum stay, and reservations are recommended.
