Now the main thoroughfare that winds through the University of Kansas campus, Jayhawk Boulevard once served as a connective ridge along which explorers and families climbed in their quest to reach the Oregon Trail.
Although erosion has erased the wagon wheel ruts that once criss-crossed the path, Jayhawk Boulevard is now home to 16 campus buildings that include classrooms, auditoriums, a chapel, museums, and laboratories.
A self-guided tour of Jayhawk Boulevard is available at the Lawrence Visitors Center (402 N. 2nd St., 785/865-4499, www.visitlawrence.com [1]), a great way to explore both the boulevard’s past and its university-centered present.
