A 30-minute Little Loop trail ride for beginning riders costs $33; the 1-hour Big Loop costs $43; the 90-minute Gobblers Knob ride costs $53; the 2-hour Hole-in-the-Wall Gang ride costs $63; and the 4-hour Reata Trail ride, for experienced riders only, costs $110. The full-day Black Butte Posse ride costs $160. Reservations are suggested; riding lessons and a kids’ day camp are also available.
Two well-groomed courses, Big Meadow and Glaze Meadow, are found at Black Butte Ranch (8 miles west of Sisters on U.S. 20, 541/595-1500 or 800/399-2322, www.blackbutteranch.com [1], $65 for 18 holes). Big Meadow is more open and forgiving, while Glaze Meadow demands precise shots. Both have tall trees and lush fairways from tee to green. Tee times can be reserved online.
Located three miles outside of nearby Sisters, the highly regarded Aspen Lakes (541/549-4653, www.aspenlakes.com [3], $75 for 18 holes) offers 27 holes in the shadow of the Three Sisters. Bent-grass fairways and distinct volcanic red-cinder bunkers add to the stunning mountain vistas.
