The Deschutes River has a dam and diversion channel just above downtown Bend [1]. It provides valuable irrigation water for the farmers and ranchers of the dry but fertile plateau to the north, and creates a placid stretch of water called Mirror Pond that is home to Canada geese, ducks, and other wildlife. Drake Park is on the east bank of this greenbelt and is a nice place to relax, have a quiet lunch, or maybe toss a Frisbee around.
However, you had better be careful where you step, as the birds leave behind numerous land mines. The folks living in those nice houses on the west bank of Mirror Pond got tired of scraping the guano off of their shoes, but unfortunately for them, they were legally unable to do anything against their fowl neighbors due to the birds’ protected status.
Instead they came up with a rather ingenious solution to the geese and their offensive droppings: The residents chipped in $1,500 to buy a pair of swans from Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Swannery in England. Since geese and swans do not get along, the citizens reasoned that the blue-blooded swans would chase away the common Canada geese. While the geese are still here, you will notice that they tend to congregate in Drake Park, while the swans have a decided preference for the private land.
This part of Bend [1] has a refreshing neighborhood feel, with older homes surrounded by lawns and trees, providing respite from downtown sprawl.
