The accommodations you’ll find on Route 62 [1] are rustic and simple, catering mainly to anglers and lovers of the great outdoors.
Rooms at the Maple Leaf Motel (20717 Rte. 62, Shady Cove, 541/878-2169, www.mapleleafmotel.org [2], $80 and up) come equipped with a microwave, a toaster oven, a small fridge, cable TV, and a picnic and barbecue area to grill the day’s catch or some burgers if the fish weren’t biting.
The Royal Coachman Motel (21906 Rte. 62, Shady Cove, 541/878-2481, www.royalcoachmanmotel.com [3], $54 and up) has kitchenettes, cable TV, and HBO. The more expensive rooms have lovely decks that overlook the river.
The Prospect Hotel and Motel (391 Mill Creek Rd., Prospect, 541/560-3664 or 800/944-6490, www.prospecthotel.com [4], historic hotel rooms from $135 including breakfast, motel rooms from $90) gives you a choice between something old and something new. The hotel, built in 1889 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has several small but comfortable guest rooms with baths.
The rooms are named after local residents and famous people who have stayed at the hotel, including Zane Grey, Teddy Roosevelt, and Jack London. Because the hotel is small and old, no children, smoking, or pets are permitted. The adjacent motel features clean, spacious, and modern units, with some kitchenettes available. Pets and children are welcome here.
Not far away from Prospect on the Crater Lake Highway [1] is the Union Creek Resort (Prospect, 541/560-3565, www.unioncreekoregon.com [5]). Built in the early 1930s, the Union Creek is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Open year-round, it has rooms available in your choice of the original lodge, simple cabins with bathrooms, or housekeeping cabins with kitchens and bathrooms.
The lodge rooms ($59–65), paneled in knotty pine, have washbasins; guests share the bathrooms down the hall. The stone fireplace in the lobby was built of opalized wood from Lakeview, Oregon. The sleeping cabins with baths range $90–105. The housekeeping cabins sleep up to 10 and range $100–235.
The Union Creek Country Store, located at the resort, carries groceries and other essential items. Fishing licenses and Sno-Park permits can also be purchased here.
