A block down California Street from downtown is the McCully Country House Inn (240 E. California St., 541/899-1942 or 800/367-1942, www.mccullycountryhouseinn.com [3], $135 and up). Built in 1861 in the classical revival style, this mansion has four beautifully appointed bedrooms with private baths. European and American antiques, oriental rugs, delicate lace curtains, and a magnificent square grand piano (tuned a half step lower than today’s A-440) add to the historical ambience. The Jacksonville Inn (175 E. California St., 541/899-1900 or 800/321-9344, www.jacksonvilleinn.com [4], $159 and up, breakfast included), lies in the heart of the commercial historic district. In addition to eight air-conditioned guest rooms furnished with restored antiques and private baths, the inn also offers four deluxe cottages complete with antiques, fireplaces, and king canopied beds. The inn has an excellent dining room. Use of mountain bikes to explore the area is included in the room rates. Reservations are highly recommended, especially during the summer.

The Touvelle House (455 N. Oregon St., 541/899-3938 or 800/846-3992, www.touvellehouse.com [5], $159 and up) offers five guest rooms and one suite, all with private baths. Each room has its own theme and features touches like antiques, handmade quilts, and tasteful interior decorations. Out back by the carriage house is a heated swimming pool and spa. Common areas include a library and a large living room. A full three-course breakfast is included, and other goodies like fruit and cookies are available for snacking anytime.
