Harry and David (1314 Center Dr., Medford, OR 97501, 541/776-2277, www.harryanddavid.com [1]), the nation’s leading purveyor of mail-order fruit, has a store in the south part of Medford [2]. The fruit-stand section of the large company store offers farm-fresh fruit and vegetables.
You can also find rejects from Harry and David’s Fruit-of-the-Month Club that are nearly as good as the mail-order fruit but are too small or blemished to meet their high quality standards. The jams and fruit spreads are also less expensive.
Brothers Harry and David Rosenberg took over their family’s Bear Creek Orchards in 1914. Bear Creek Orchards was recognized for the size and quality of its pears, which were shipped to the grand hotels of Europe. But the lucrative export market of this company collapsed during the Depression, so the brothers decided to sell their fruit by mail.
Harry and David is the oldest mail order business in the country and now the largest gourmet fruit and food gift company in the world.
