If you don’t want to spend a bundle on lodging but want to stay in the center of Ashland [2], Best Western Bard’s Inn Motel (132 N. Main St., 541/482-0049 or 800/528-1234, www.bardsinn.com [3], $136 and up) is a good choice. Located just across the Main Street bridge from downtown, the Bard’s Inn is no more than five minutes’ walk from the theaters. There are a number of guest-room types, all nicely furnished and well maintained. Facilities include a stream-side restaurant and bar.

Morical House Garden Inn (668 N. Main St., 541/482-2254 or 800/208-0960, www.garden-inn.com [4], $140 and up) is a seven-room restored 1880s farmhouse plus a newer guesthouse with three luxury suites, each with a picture-postcard view of Grizzly Mountain and the Siskiyou foothills. Wooden floors, stained-glass windows, and antiques sustain the “good old days” theme despite the many modern conveniences.
n season, the two acres of gardens provide organic produce for breakfast as well as a wide variety of herbs and flowers. Many species of birds and butterflies are attracted to the gardens, which are tastefully accented by a waterfall and stream meandering through the grounds. Given all this, it’s sometimes hard to remember that you are only a few blocks away from downtown theaters and shopping.
The Pelton House bed-and-breakfast (228 B St., 866/488-7003 or 541/488-7003, www.peltonhouse.com [5], $135 and up) is located in a historic Victorian just a few blocks from the Shakespeare festival [6]. Each of its seven rooms is has an earthy theme, and two suites are available for families or groups.
