All the press about Bandon Dunes [1] has obscured the development of another great course, Salmon Run Golf and Wilderness Preserve (99040 South Bank Chetco River Rd., 541/469-4888, www.salmonruninfo.net [2], greens fees $31 for 9 holes, $52 for 18 holes, excluding cart). This beautiful 18-hole public links—not far from the Kalmiopsis Wilderness [3]—was designed with environmentally sensitive imperatives, so numerous wildlife sightings may be enjoyed here long into the future.
Whether it’s the chance to see salmon (usually after the first rains in November) and steelhead spawning (January), black bears, elk, and wild turkeys, or just the opportunity to play a first-rate course, golfers shouldn’t overlook this one.
Beginner and intermediate players may find the executive nine-hole course ideal. This par-34 course within a course is located on the back nine holes and measures 1,310 yards.
Your Oregon coastal golf pilgrimage can begin at Salmon Run, then hit Bandon Dunes [1], Sandpines (Florence) [4], and Salishan (near Lincoln City) [5].
