For the best ocean views, often with nearby trails to the beach, look to the lodgings along the Beach Loop [1]. If you want to be able to walk to dinner in Old Town, stay at one of the in-town locations. For the best of both worlds, bring a bike and cycle into town from a Beach Loop room.
Bandon [2] bills itself as America’s storm-watching capital, and special packages are often available October–March.
Right in the heart of Old Town, the
Sea Star Guesthouse (370 1st St., 541/347-9632 or 888/732-7871, www.seastarbandon.com [3], $95 and up) has just four suites, but each is charming and uniquely decorated, with skylights, wood-beam ceilings, a verdant courtyard, and views onto the harbor. Suites sleep 2–6 and have cooking facilities. In addition, Sea Star has a couple of inexpensive dorm-style rooms with single bunk beds that share a bathroom ($27).
On the Beach Loop is Sunset Lodging (1865 Beach Loop Rd., 541/347-2453 or 800/842-2407, www.sunsetmotel.com [4], $60 and up), a motel complex with a variety of lodging types. With some units built right into the cliff above a scenic beach, the view here is hard to beat. Whether you’re looking for guest rooms with a kitchen, guest rooms that accommodate pets, or guest rooms with a fireplace, there’s something here for you. A hot tub, an indoor pool, on-site laundry, and Lord Bennett’s restaurant across the street also highlight this place. Nonetheless, the steep steps down the 80-foot-high bluff to the beach, the busy atmosphere, and the rusticity of the least expensive guest rooms might not be to everyone’s liking.
Set on a bluff overlooking Old Town, the
Bandon Inn (355 U.S. 101, 541/347-4417 or 800/526-0209, www.bandoninn.com [5], from $119 d) has spectacular views, comfortable rooms all with balconies, and a path down to town. Pets are permitted in some rooms. This is a great spot to stay if you want the wining and dining of Old Town within walking distance.
A favorite place to stay on the Beach Loop [1] is the older but refurbished Windermere Motel (3250 Beach Loop Rd., 541/347-3710, www.windermerebythesea.com [6], $120 and up), where baby-boomers can relive their childhood beach getaways in cedar efficiencies or two-story condo-like units, situated on a bluff above a windswept beach. Housekeeping facilities and proximity to restaurants (Lord Bennett’s) and the West Coast Game Park [7] also make this an ideal family vacation spot.
Another popular place is the Best Western Inn at Face Rock (3225 Beach Loop Rd., 541/347-9441 or 800/638-3092, $139 and up). Part of its popularity has to do with the motel’s location—set back from the road near the end of the beach loop, across the street from Bandon [2]’s coastline, and near the Old Bandon Links golf course. Many of the modern well-appointed guest rooms have magnificent ocean views. An indoor pool, a fitness room, a whirlpool, and a restaurant also make this an especially good choice for active travelers. Some suites have fireplaces, kitchenettes, and private patios. There is a short path to the beach.
For avid golfers, the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort [8] (57744 Round Lake Dr., 888/345-6008, www.bandondunesgolf.com [9], $200 and up) is the place to stay. Lodging is in several different locations around the resort and includes single lodge or inn rooms in various sizes, two- or four-bedroom suites, and multibedroom cottages. View options vary from golf course and ocean views to dune and surrounding woods. Bandon Dunes is five minutes from Bandon, a mile north of the Coquille, and 27 miles (30 minutes’ drive) from the North Bend Airport, which is served by daily flights from Portland [10].
Bandon is an easy place to spend a week, and there are several property-management companies that can help you find a house to rent.
Coastal Vacation Rentals (541/347-3009 or 800/336-5693, www.coastalvacationrentals.com [11]) offers a broad range of properties, including a studio suitable for a single person or a couple and several places that accept pets. Many of the places offered by Exclusive Property Management (541/347-3790 or 800/527-5445, www.visitbandon.com [12]) are large and quite upscale, with great locations and lovely interior design. It also rents a few more modest homes, so don’t be afraid to call or check the website.
Bandon Beach Vacation Rentals (54515 Beach Loop Rd., 541/347-4801 or 888/441-8030, www.bandonbeachrentals.com [13]) has several units available, including one place that’ll sleep 10 people.
