Midway between Charleston [1] and Bandon [2] is the quiet beach at Whiskey Run, whose ore-bearing sands spread gold fever down the south coast in the early 1850s. As many as 2,000 miners worked here until a storm washed away the deposit.
Other forms of beachcombing at Whiskey Run and on the beaches to the north are still thriving, however. Agate-hunting after a season of winter storms and clamming at low tide make these solitary shorelines ideal places to forget worldly concerns.
To get there, turn west from the lightly traveled Seven Devils Road onto Whiskey Run Road, and drive 1.5 miles to this county park.
