Every June, over Father’s Day weekend, chainsaw sculptors compete for $10,000 in prizes as they transform pieces of raw western red cedar into grizzly bears, giant salmon, and other rustic works of art during the Chainsaw Sculpture Championships (www.odcsc.com [1]) at the Rainbow Plaza in Old Town Reedsport [2], near North Second Street and Greenwood Avenue.
An intriguing annual event is Tsalila (www.tsalila.com [3]), held the second weekend in September. Named for the Coos Indian word for river and pronounced sa-LEE-la, this festival features music, interpretive tours of the Umpqua, alder-baked salmon with squash and corn-on-the-cob dinners, and a traditional Indian village on the waterfront at the Umpqua Discovery Center [4]. There’s no charge except dinner prices of $10 for adults and $5 for kids.
Contact the Reedsport Chamber of Commerce (541/271-3495 or 800/247-2155, www.reedsportcc.org [5]) for more information on events and festivals in the area.
