Less than one mile south of Winchester Bay [1] is Umpqua Lighthouse State Park (460 Lighthouse Rd., Winchester Bay, 541/271-4118). Tour the red-capped 1894 lighthouse (541/271-4631, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. daily May–Sept., $3) or admire it from the roadside.
Next door, in a former Coast Guard building, the visitors center and museum (541/271-4631, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Wed.–Sat., 1–5 p.m. Sun. May–Sept.) has marine and timber exhibits; this is also where tours begin.
Directly opposite the lighthouse, overlooking the mouth of the Umpqua and oceanfront dunes, is a whale-watching platform with a plaque explaining where, when, and what to look for.
Lake Marie, just south near the camping area, has a swimming beach and is stocked with rainbow trout. A one-mile forest trail around the lake makes for an easy hike. A trail from the campground leads to the highest dunes in the United States (elev. 545 feet), west of Clear Lake.
