Newport [1] is a town for serious diners—folks who know good food and don’t mind paying a tad more for it. It’s also the kind of place where wharf-side vendors supply it on the cheap. June through October, you can pick up the freshest garden produce the area has to offer, plus baked goods, honey, and other delectables at the Lincoln County Small Farmers’ Association’s Saturday Farmers Market, held in the parking area of the Newport Armory (41 SW U.S. 101, 541/574-4040), on the east side of the highway just behind City Hall. It kicks off at 9 a.m.

About seven miles east of the Bayfront [2], the Oregon Oyster Farms (6878 Yaquina Bay Rd., Newport, 541/265-5078, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily) is the only remaining commercial outlet for Yaquina Bay oysters. Visitors are welcome to observe the farming and processing of these succulent shellfish. Try oysters on the half-shell, or sample smoked oysters on a stick. To get there, follow Bay Boulevard east six miles from the Embarcadero Resort.
