Tucked into the neighborhood between busy U.S. 101 and the beach, the Connie Hansen Garden (1931 NW 33rd St., 541/994-6338, www.conniehansengarden.com [1], dawn–dusk daily, free) is a great example of a coastal rain forest garden. The late Connie Hansen bought the land because its dampness seemed well suited to growing irises, her favorite plants, but she soon expanded her vision, working with the site’s ecology and her own artistic talents to create a horticultural showcase.
Guided tours are available for a small fee with advance notice, and the garden almost always has some unusual plants for sale.
