Stop by the Astoria Coffeehouse Cafe (245 11th St., 503/325-1787, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. daily, breakfast $4–7, lunch $6–8) for an egg sandwich and a cup of Stumptown coffee. It’s an airy, friendly place to sit and read the paper, but if you’re off to explore town, you can also just grab a premade sandwich from the deli case.
At the collectively run
Blue Scorcher Bakery Cafe (1493 Duane St., 503/338-7473, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Sat.–Sun., sandwiches $9), the motto is “joyful work, delicious food, and strong community,” and it’s all true. Settle in with a tasty veggie sandwich (if the tempeh Reuben is on the menu, don’t turn up your nose at it) and watch the Astorians—any one of whom would make an excellent new friend—come and go. On Fridays, a wide range of gluten-free pastries are offered. If it’s all too healthy and wholesome for you, there’s a brewpub next door.
