Carlton

From Route 99W, jog north on Route 47 to the small town of Carlton, where the Carlton Winemaker’s Studio (801 N. Scott St., 503/852-6100, www.winemakersstudio.com [1], June–Sept.) houses several boutique wineries, including Andrew Rich, Hamacher, and Bryce. One purpose of the studio is to help up-and-coming winemakers by providing space and support; several winemakers—including Penner-Ash, Domaine Meriwether, and Scott Paul—have “graduated” to their own facilities.

Right in the heart of tiny downtown Carlton, The Tasting Room (105 W. Main St., 503/852-6733, Thurs.–Mon.) sells the bottles of a wide variety of local producers, many of whom run small wineries without formal tasting rooms.

Another good place to stop in Carlton during the Memorial Day and Thanksgiving weekends is Ken Wright Cellars (236 N. Kutch St., 503/852-7070, www.kenwrightcellars.com [2]), another high-quality winery with chardonnay and pinot blanc in addition to the pinot noir; at other times of year, the Tasting Room represents Wright’s wines.

Check out the beautiful facility and one of the most panoramic views in the valley at Anne Amie Vineyards (6580 NE Mineral Springs Rd., 503/864-2991), where you’ll also find top-notch pinot noir, pinot blanc, and pinot gris.
